How Are Movies Made?

We all love the movies, but have you ever wondered how your favorite movie was created? It’s easy to overlook the whole process that goes into creating a hit film as you sit in the theater, so here’s a quick 101 on how a film makes it onto the big screen.   If you ask people in the industry, many will tell you that making movies is a lot of fun. It’s like creating a whole new world that people can escape to. Movie directors get to decide what the characters do, the setting, and how the story unfolds. It’s up to them to make sure that the movie is entertaining and engaging, but…

It’s A Long Process

Incredible moviesrequire A LOT of time and effort to complete. Often millions of dollars and 100+ talented people aree involved in making a movie worthy of an Oscar award.

Concept

The first step infilmmaking is to develop an idea. A film concept is the most basic idea of what something might be. The spark that ignites a narrative or scenario and the primary characters you’ll follow throughout the film. Some films are based on existing stories, books, or real-world events, while others are entirely new ideas that must be carefully crafted into a compelling storyline that will capture the attention of the audience.

Budgeting

Financing of film projects often requires an elaborate patchwork of investors, banks, soft money tax credits and in-kind services, and some companies specialize in financing specific stages of production. The producer is responsible for funding the film and will work with various entities like Studios, independent investors, banks, and other distributors. If the film goes over budget, the producer is forced to come up with the additional funds needed or risk the film never making it onto the screen. Idea development

Every movie you’ve ever seen first started with an idea. Although things evolve and change as a project goes on, the initial idea for the story serves as the foundation on which everything else will be built.

Scriptwriting

Every film has a “screenplay,” which details each scene, location, and character interaction. The scriptwriters work alongside the producer, director, and other key stakeholders in the film to develop the storyline and all of the scenes which will ultimately make it into the final cut, though many will get chopped along the way.

Hiring the cast

Movies require talented actors to become a success. Even the best scripts can fall flat without the right mix of actors to bring the story to life.    Casting calls are one of the first places that directors look to find actors for their movies. These calls allow directors to see a pool of potential talent all at once, and they can get a better sense of who might be a good fit for the movie.   For some films the Producers adn Directors may have certain actors and actresses in mind for key roles and will seek them out to negotiate a contract to take on the role.

Finding a location

Scouting is the process of looking for possible filming sites. Scouts scour for both indoor and outdoor locations that will satisfy the requirements outlined in the script.

Production schedules

A production schedule helps with keeping the film production process organized. It is a timeline of all the critical steps that need to be completed during pre-production, production, and post-production. This schedule ensures that each department knows what needs to be done and when it needs to be done.

Shooting

Everything focuses on obtaining the unedited video, all of the required shots and noises. The crew will work together to get all of the footage needed for the movie. This can be done through various methods such as storyboards or ad-libbing.

Editing

Time and expertise by the editing team are required to properly communicate the narrative as written in the script and depicted on the storyboard.

Distribution and promotion

With the film now completed, it’s time to release it. The distribution of a finished product is primarily concerned with how and where it will be shown. This is where the marketing team gets to shine.
